Home Who We Are Our Story Temple Israel Cemetery

The uniquely beautiful Temple Israel Cemetery is a place of solace, comfort, and private reflection for congregants and their families. It is a place to mourn those we love and to honor the traditions which keep their memory sacred.

Located in Wakefield, Massachusetts, the Temple Israel Cemetery was created as part of the American Garden Cemetery Movement. Its peaceful and tranquil natural environment offers spiritual renewal to all who visit.

Temple Israel Cemetery is also a place of communal memory, preserving more than 160 years of rich history in a lakeside setting of dignity and natural beauty. Established in 1859, five years after Temple Israel’s founding, it is a significant part of the life cycle of the congregation’s families.

As a visitor, you will be able to see an evolution in customs and tastes, with early markers to the more recent. What has remained constant throughout the cemetery’ history has been the founders’ commitment to a beautiful, natural, well-maintained environment. The cemetery is a non-profit entity and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1989.

A Service of Remembrance is held at the cemetery every spring, preceded by a brief walking tour which visits a different group of graves each year, honoring and learning about past members of the community.

The Cemetery is located 14 miles from downtown Boston. From Boston, take Route 128 north to Exit 57, North Avenue, Wakefield. Continue right at the exit ramp onto North Avenue and proceed .7 mile and turn left onto Beacon Street. The Temple Israel Cemetery is on the right. The Cemetery may be visited during daylight hours every day except July 4.

Whether you are planning for the future or need to make immediate arrangements, Temple Israel’s staff can offer caring and knowledgeable assistance. Lots may be purchased by Temple Israel members in good standing. Single and multiple lots are available, as is burial of cremated remains. The purchase price of the lot includes perpetual care to ensure the cemetery’s high standard of maintenance into the future.
