We bring in the light and hope of Chanukah by lighting the first candle together with Dr. Tareq Abu Hamed, Executive Director of Arava Institute. In the hyper-arid, drought-stricken Middle East, one resource is more precious than water: Trust. We will learn how the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies demonstrates cooperation on environmental issues  can  impact all the people of the region as an effective path to peace-building among communities that have been locked in conflict for generations.

Formerly the Israeli Ministry of Science’s Deputy Chief Scientist and Acting Chief Scientist  — the highest ranking Palestinian in the Israeli government — Dr. Abu Hamed now leads the Arava Institute in regional cooperation through applied environmental diplomacy and is the co-chair of the regional cooperation and security task force of President Herzog’s Israel Climate Forum.  We look forward to gathering on the first night of Chanukah and learning how the environment teaches cooperation and peace.
