Judaism as Art: A Search for Congruity

March 20, 2023

07:00 PM - 08:30 PM EDT

Can Jewish spiritual practice be understood as a kind of art? How can the artistic process illuminate Jewish living? To address these questions, we will look at some of the themes that have occupied modern art production and consumption, in particular — the presence or absence of the author; the possibility of creations going out of control; the tension between discipline and creative spontaneity in art production, and the poetics of darkness and light.

It is our hope by showcasing some of the common themes between classical Jewish texts and modern art that we might begin to imagine a new intersection between Judaism and art. No prior experience in art production necessary, though personal experience is welcome.

This IYUN Circle is designed for those in their 20 & 30's and will be taught by Rabbi Oberstein and will take place onsite only. We ask for a $54 donation to confirm your commitment to attending all 10 weeks of this small group learning experience. If, for any reason you are not able to contribute $54, please register using the "IYUN Circle Registration'' option in Eventbrite and pay what you can. If you have not already done so, please fill out the IYUN Circle Registration  in addition to your registration through Eventbrite.
