This seminar will explore the artistic methods and materials of Henri Matisse, from pencil drawings to paper cutouts, and how the artist became an icon of modern art. With Matisse scholar Camran Mani as our guide, we will look at, and talk as a group about, selections from Harvard’s substantial Matisse collection displayed in the beautiful natural light of the Art Study Center. At the same time, we will develop a better sense of what impelled the changes in Matisse’s art, why it has been a source of controversy and inspiration, and how Harvard formed its collection. Notable works will include a study for the groundbreaking painting The Joy of Life and the book Jazz in which the artist presents cutout compositions and handwritten “notes to self” reflecting on his life as he approaches the age of 80.

Join us March 19 at 12:15 p.m. The program location is off site and will be shared upon registration.

There is also a tour at 11:00 a.m. and a tour at 1:30 p.m. will be added if there is enough interest.

Early registration is available for TILLI and Temple Israel members for two weeks. Please email tilli@tisrael.org to receive your early-registration link. General registration opens Friday, December 19.
