United States of Sepharad: Savoring Sephardic Recipes Across America

Many people know about the flavors of the Sephardic diaspora throughout the Mediterranean, but what about here in the USA? Since even before the beginning of the United States there has been a strong Sephardic presence in this part of the world.

In this three-part online series, we’ll be exploring the delicacies of American Sephardim all over the continental states, learning the history and savoring along the way! Join PhD student Sara Gardner as we cook our way across the Sephardic United States this spring.

Session 1: Sephardic South

Sunday, February 27 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

In this session we’ll explore the presence of the Sephardic community since the colonial period, particularly in the cities of Charleston and Savannah, and cook some southern Sephardic dishes! Click here to register for Session 1. 

Session 2: Sephardic Seattle

Sunday, March 6 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

In this session, we’ll learn about the recipes and food traditions of the Sephardic community in the Pacific Northwest, with its deep roots in the Mediterranean and specifically the island of Rhodes. Click here to register for Session 2. 

Session 3: Sephardic Southwest

Sunday, March 13 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

In this last session we will wrap up our time together by travelling to the Southwest, where the long-standing presence of crypto-Jews dating back to the 16th century has had profound influence on the culinary repertoire of that area. Click here to register for Session 3.
