Tu B’Shvat Seder

On Martin Luther King weekend our community is dedicated to strengthening our commitment to racial justice and peace. This year, we are excited to celebrate Tu B’Shvat, the Jewish New Year of the Trees during our weekend of justice. Join us online on Monday, January 17 at 3:00 p.m. for a Tu B’Shvat Seder as we weave in the teachings and wisdom of Dr. King and our Jewish commitment to environmental justice.

In order to have everything you need for the online seder, prepare in advance by making sure you have:

  • Red and white wine or juice
  • Food with an inedible outer covering and edible insides, such as: melons, nuts, pomegranates, coconuts, citrus, bananas, etc.
  • Food with an edible outside but inedible pit inside, such as: dates, olives, plums, peaches, apples, avocados, nectarines, pears, etc.
  • Foods that are entirely edible, such as: berries, figs, grapes, etc.

Shabbat Tzedek and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of Justice Encounters Schedule of All Events

Themes of justice will be interwoven throughout the weekend’s events and services from Friday through Monday.

Friday, January 14, onsite and online

6:00 p.m. Join us for an inspirational Shabbat Tzedek, a Sabbath of Justice, to celebrate the values of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with honored guest Rachael Rollins, U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. This service is open to people of all faiths. No need to register; just come! After services, all are invited to take home delicious cuisine from our Black-owned restaurant partners Zaz and Fresh Food Generation courtesy of Temple Israel.

For those in their 20s and 30s: Rabbi Oberstein will be hosting an online Riverway Zoom oneg, offering us a chance to connect after services.

Saturday, January 15, online only

9:00 a.m. Shabbat Tzedek Torah Study.
We begin with Tefilah led by TI clergy, followed by an engaging Torah Study steeped in the values embodied by our Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion work. Join us on Zoom.

8:00 p.m.  Shabbat Tzedek Havdalah.
We reconnect for Havdalah as we reflect on the themes of this Shabbat. Join on Zoom, or Facebook Live, or stream on our website.

Sunday, January 16, online only

8:00 a.m. (or 11:00 a.m.) Shabbat Tzedek at Bethel AME Church. Join us and our neighbors at Bethel AME Church for their Sunday worship and MLK commemoration, joint sermon by Rabbi Zecher and Reverend Gloria White-Hammond, and breakout discussion groups with members of the Bethel AME community. We encourage you to attend the 8:00 a.m. service where more Bethel members will be in attendance.

2:00 p.m. Riverway REDI Conversation
An intimate social justice conversation for those in their 20s and 30s through the Riverway Project.

3:00 p.m. Tu B’Shvat Seder, online only
All are invited to a Tu B’Shvat Seder as we weave together the teachings and wisdom of Dr. King and our Jewish commitment to environmental justice.
