Shabbat Tzedek and Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of Social Justice
Since 1992, Temple Israel has devoted the Shabbat which precedes Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day to celebrating the values and life of Dr. King. We call this special Shabbat evening “Shabbat Tzedek,” a Sabbath of Justice. Hosted by Temple Israel’s Racial Justice Initiative in partnership with clergy, we welcome over 800 people from the TI community and our neighbors to celebrate Shabbat and learn from an invited speaker. This year we welcome honored guest Tanisha M. Sullivan, President of the Boston branch of the NAACP.
The weekend continues on Saturday morning with a Racial Justice themed Torah study followed by REDI (Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) conversations and lunch catered by local Black-owned restaurants.
In the evening we have a Shabbat Tzedek Havdalah and Musical Gathering (a Sing-along Songfest for Peace, Freedom, and Justice), and for people in their 20s/30s there will be a Riverway Havdalah, REDI conversations, and dinner.
Our members are invited to join Bethel AME Church on Sunday morning for their prayer service.
On Monday, there is a Riverway (20s/30s) online direct service opportunity with Repair the World, and our Religious School students will be involved in justice projects.
