9 Tishrei 5776
Dear Third Grade Families,
It was so nice to meet you all this past Sunday – I am enthused by the energy you all brought to our welcome assembly in the Levi Auditorium. I look forward to carrying this energy with us throughout the year!
In the classroom on Sunday we made a Classroom Covenant, a ברית הכבוד, and talked about the High Holy Days: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We learned that the days in between RH and YK are called the Days of Awe. We talked about תשובה – Teshuvah the Hebrew word meaning ‘to return.’ We learned that during this time of year, we as Jews reflect on the past year and make up for any mistakes we might have made. The students learned that the first step is admitting the mistake, next is apologizing to those who it might have affected, and lastly vowing never to do it again. We finished this discussion by each sharing a moment where we might have ‘missed the mark’ and we talked about how we dealt with these mistakes in the moment.
We also read a book called The Hardest Word: A Yom Kippur Story by Jacqueline Jules. In the book, the main character The Ziz struggles to find the hardest word which is sorry. As a class, we discussed how sometimes it can be hard to say sorry, but that it’s important to do so when you make a mistake. We also practiced and reviewed the alef-bet by doing some alef-bet yoga.
I want to also let you know that this Sunday marks the beginning of Sukkot. While we will hold a regular school schedule, we are also inviting families back to the temple for a special K-7 community gathering at 5:00 p.m. There will be a complimentary dinner provided before the congregation wide Sukkot Festival. If you and your family would like to attend the dinner please RSVP to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Wishing you all an easy fast and גמר חתימה טובה!
See you Sunday,
PS each class session we will have a 10 minute break, or הפסקה, if your child would like to have a snack during this time, please send it with them as we do not provide snack.
