What is the ongoing significance of the 14th Amendment? Join TILLI (Temple Israel Lifelong Learning Institute) for a screening of the first episode of the Netflix series Amend: The Fight for America. The first episode tells the story of the adoption of the 14th Amendment and the subsequent struggle to live up to the promise of its words. The heart of the 14th Amendment is the definition of citizenship. All citizens have rights and the protection of the law. Prior to the adoption of the 14th Amendment, only white men had any rights. This amendment is pivotal for establishing equal protection in this country.

This film has important content and is meant to entertain along the way. We will watch together, followed by a discussion moderated by Ruth Klepper.

This event is offered as part of the TILLI Summer Session 2022, featuring a series of programs that address recent attacks on the democratic process. The struggle to vote and to making every vote count is central to what happens both at the local and national levels. Yet, we watch as state legislatures alter voting rules and redistrict their state maps to further restrict access to voting. Where does democracy go from here? All TILLI Summer Sessions are free and open to all.
