The Book of Genesis in Early Hasidic Thought: The Torah Commentary of Rabbi Moses Haim Efraim of Sudlikov (1748-1800)

Taught by Rabbi Or Rose, Director of the The Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership at Hebrew College

Join us as we explore the mystical commentary of the Master (Rebbe) of Sudlikov on the Torah portions of Sefer Bereishit (The Book of Genesis). The Degel Mahaneh Efraim (“The Banner of the Encampment of Efraim”), first published in 1810, is considered a classic work by Hasidim and scholars alike, as the preacher gives eloquent voice to key themes in early Hasidism, such as prayer and meditation; Torah study; spiritual and ethical growth; and the relationship of Hasidim to one another and to their Rebbe. Furthermore, it is a primary source for teachings from and anecdotes about the author’s grandfather, the Ba’al Shem Tov (1700-1760), and other early figures in this popular mystical revival movement.

In each session we will examine 2-3 homilies from the Degel, focusing on how our commentator engages the biblical texts and related materials as an eighteenth-century Jewish spiritual leader, and what we might learn today from these creative exegetical reflections. All sources will be made available in the Hebrew original and in English translation. The instructor will also provide optional secondary readings on Hasidism and Jewish preaching and commentarial traditions.

This is a 7-part class that will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. ET, October 25 - December 6, 2022. It will be offered in mixed presence, with the option to attend onsite at Temple Israel or online via Zoom.
