Jewish Gems of New England is a series of day trips hosted by the Center for Adult Jewish Learning at Temple Israel of Boston. Together we travel and explore communities throughout the northeast to expand our individual and collective knowledge of Jewish art, history, and culture in our extended neighborhood.

Join us on Sunday, March 19, 2023 for our inaugural trip to explore Jewish Maine. We will take a bus to Portland, Maine and tour the Maine Jewish Museum that is housed in a restored 1921 synagogue in Portland’s historic East End neighborhood. The museum is a venue for contemporary art exhibitions feature established, Jewish-connected, and Maine-connected artists. The museum also houses Jack Montgomery’s photo exhibit of Holocaust survivors who settled in Maine, an exhibition of Maine Jewish History, an interactive exhibition “Maine Synagogues Past and Present” and the Maine Jewish Hall of Fame Presented By Dorothy Suzi Osher in memory of Alfred Osher created in 2018.

After the museum tour, we will have lunch and learn about Documenting Maine Jewry a collaborative history and genealogy project of Maine’s vibrant Jewish communities, followed by a bus tour of Portland before heading back to Temple Israel.

We will depart Temple Israel at 9:00 a.m. and return no later than 5:00 p.m. The cost of the trip includes all travel expenses and lunch. This program is open to all.
