After some Hebrew reading review, we looked more closely at this google presentation with images and a walk-through of the Second Temple during the time of Herod – the first century A.D. We discussed what happened there – sacrifices, not prayer. We found the kadosh kedoshim (holy of holies) where only the kohen gadol (high priest) could enter and only on Yom Kippur.
We discussed some major differences between worship in the second Temple in Jerusalem and at Temple Israel. Nobody missed having Rabbi Friedman sacrifice a (scape)goat to transfer our sins on Yom Kippur!
After everyone had an idea about what happened in each of the spaces, the building began with excitement. As everyone was building, I talked a bit with each group about what each space they were building was used for.
Many kids asked if they could bring in additional materials – small boxes and containers, paints, gold wrapping paper etc. to create people and make their structure look more ornate. Please ask your kids about their ideas for what they want to add next week and brainstorm what items you might have around the house to add those details. We will continue building next Thursday but you are welcome to bring materials on Sunday if its easier to leave them at Temple Israel. We definitely need more small boxes (cereal boxes, shoe boxes, pasta boxes, etc) and containers so please continue to save and send in your recyclables.
