Samson: A Muscular Myth Magnified and Re-Manufactured in Every Age

with Rabbi Ronne Friedman
Mondays, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., starting October 28
Cost: $150 members; $210 non-members (dinner included)
This six-week course will begin with a critical investigation of the Biblical story of Samson (Judges 13-16), followed by discussion of Ze’ev Jabotinksy’s 1930 novel, Samson the Nazarite and David Grossman’s 2005 book, The Lion’s Honey. The Samson saga has inspired writers to retell the story in order to reflect the culture and politics of their own times, and we will contrast the Jabotinsky’s (right of center) Revisionist Zionism of the early 20th Century with Grossman’s (left of center) early 21st century attitudes towards Israel’s conflict with the Palestinians. Course registration includes a copy of both books.
