Jewish Humor

For centuries, Jews have had a tradition of humor and joking.  Many of today's best comedians and performers are Jewish.  Jewish humor ranges from absurd religious arguments and witticisms in the Talmud to the long tradition of Eastern European jokes lampooning the Jewish community to modern American entertainment.  Most notable among Eastern European Jewish traditions are self-deprecating jokes such as the stories of the foolish "wise men" of Chelm.  In the United States, Jews have long been in the forefront of American humor from early vaudeville and The Goldbergs, one of America's first radio shows, down to present-day television shows such as Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.  Jewish humor is noted for subtle witticisms, self-deprecation and verbal jabs at the Jewish community.  This pathfinder will help the reader explore the abundant resources available in the Temple Israel Library and the Internet related to Jewish humor.
