The Conflict in Israel/Palestine: Is There Room for Dialogue?

Rose Feinberg Memorial Lecture, featuring Mira Sucharov

When it comes to understanding the dynamics in Israel/Palestine, why is the concept of “dialogue” so controversial? Why do some people object to the term “conflict?” And is what is happening between Israelis and Palestinians a tragedy, systemic oppression, or both? Please join Mira Sucharov, Professor of Political Science at Carleton University and public commentator on Israeli-Palestinian and Diaspora Jewish affairs as she takes us through the debates over dialogue, activism and peace building in the Israeli-Palestinian domain. Sucharov will highlight the work of grassroots groups like Combatants for Peace and other civil organizations in Israel and Palestine, while suggesting avenues for Diaspora Jewish communities to advance a vision of equality and justice for all.

Mira Sucharov is Professor of Political Science at Carleton University and University Chair of Teaching Innovation in Ottawa, Canada, where she specializes in the politics of Israel/Palestine. Her books include Borders and Belonging: A Memoir (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021), Public Influence: A Guide to Op-Ed Writing and Social Media Engagement (University of Toronto Press, 2019), and Social Justice and Israel/Palestine: Foundational and Contemporary Debates (University of Toronto Press, 2019, co-edited with Aaron J. Hahn Tapper). Her many op-eds have appeared in The Globe and Mail, Haaretz, The Forward, The Daily Beast and elsewhere; she serves on the Advisory Council of the New Israel Fund-Canada, and she is a founder of a social media group called Drachim — A New Path Forward for Israel/Palestine.
