Our Leadership
Leadership Council
President's Letter: November/December 2011
Committees, working groups, and volunteer efforts are the backbone of Temple Israel activities. By partnering with the clergy and staff, volunteers amplify everything that happens at Temple Israel. Some of these committees have long established responsibilities to set policy and report regularly to the Board regarding Finance, Audit, Cemetery, Building and Grounds, and Nominating activities. Other working groups, such as Development, Human Resources, and Legal, have arisen to help support the Board and staff.
Some traditional committees have evolved to meet our changing congregational needs. To guide our many educational activities, for instance, the Leadership in Education Advisory Group (LEAG) has representatives from the Religious School Committee, Teen Education Committee, Adult Education Committee, and FJECC Parent Board. New committees also arise in response to member interests such as the TI Lifelong Learning Initiative (TILLI), while others help enrich our synagogue in the areas of Library, Archives, and Museum.
Membership has always been an important function, but in recent years this mantle has been taken up by the Engagement Task Force, who is helping define different ways for members to be involved. Working groups focusing on New Members, Riverway, Caring Community, and Leadership Development spring up to address specific needs. The Technology Committee wouldn't have been imagined twenty years ago, but now helps with our hardware systems, software, and social media.
Some working groups are really more of a movement than a governance structure. The Women of Reform Judaism and the Brotherhood have always welcomed members to participate on a spectrum of activities. For those interested in social justice activities, Ohel Tzedek takes the pulse of the congregation and assembles teams of interested members around specific actions. So if you feel like getting involved and forming new connections, please ask me, the clergy, our executive director, or any of the Board or Council members, on how to take the first step.
