Since 5777, The Tent has been a partner site for Boston-Haifa Connection, faciliated by CJP. We are paired with Kiryat Haim High School in Haifa, Israel. Participating students spend two semesters in our Boston-Haifa Connection elective at The Tent, learning together and building relationships with their sibling class in Kiryat Haim. The course culminates in a 10-day trip to Israel for The Tent students, followed by a 10-day visit to Boston for Kiryat Haim students.
Students will be part of a 1-hour Tent elective for the full year (students will be able to take a second elective in the other hour). You will engage in deep learning about the land, state, and modern history of Israel. The elective will be a safe space in which you can openly address the most important issues facing the vital relationship of the world’s two largest Jewish communities with teachers and peers you know and trust.
Participants will stay with families of Kiryat Haim students for about 5 nights. You will visit the high school, tour the city of Haifa, celebrate Shabbat with the Or Chadash Congregation, and build relationships with your Israeli classmates. We will then spend about 5 days of guided travel through Israel with Puzzle Israel, a professional tour company that is wonderful at providing us with a unique and personalized travel experience that contextualized and deepened our class learning.
Participants and their families will host 1-2 teens from Kiryat Haim in their homes. Since our Boston students will be in school during the week days, our Israeli partners will spend those days touring Boston and engaging in learning led by Tent staff. On evenings and weekends, activities for the full Boston-Haifa cohort will be planned. Boston students are expected to plan ahead with school work and evening activities to ensure that they will have time to engage as much as possible with the Haifa students during their stay.
To qualify for participation, students must be in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, must be enrolled in The Tent for the full program year, and must have parent/guardian consent.
The total cost of the program is $3,000.00, which includes air and ground travel, venues, food, and accommodations in Israel, as well as venues and food while hosting the Haifa delegation in Boston. A $500.00 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of registration, and the remaining $2,500.00 is due in October of the program year.
Students with CJP Passport to Israel accounts may use their funds to pay for this trip to Israel. A fully-funded Passport to Israel account will pay for nearly all of the trip costs.
Scholarship funds are available for families who may need it. Please contact Rabbi Suzie Jacobson, Director of Education, to discuss.
