Israel and Us: Our Congregational Response to a Charged and Complex Relationship
Our relationship with Israel, particularly as American Reform Jews, is fraught with mixed feelings. Too often we avoid discussion of the political and religious complexities that confront us. Concerned by the erosion of our connection to Israel, we are embarking on three years of Adult Education focused upon Israel as both people and place. How are our identities as Jews informed by our relationship to Israel?
Year 1: Jerusalem: Myth, History, and the Current Reality
Jerusalem, in myth and reality, has been central to historic Judaism for three thousand years. Jerusalem has also been central to other religions and to the aspirations of Americans of disparate faiths since our country was founded. In this year of adult education, you can learn of Jerusalem's origins, both real and imagined; study Jerusalem's place in ancient and modern literature; explore Jerusalem's impact upon the current peace process; and discover how the people of Jerusalem struggle with the same urban issues as so many other cities. You can also travel to Jerusalem, the focal point of Jewish history and literature, culture and practice, in the spring or fall of 2012.
